Indexed Universal Life

Many Agents sell Indexed Universal Life products to people who should not be in them for many of the wrong reasons.  IUL’s are not a product that is suited to most individuals.  Other agents arguing that this is a great product for the masses are giving bad advice, mutual funds most likely a better investment, insurance is not an ‘investment’.  As a general rule Term Life Insurance is adequate from a pure protection standpoint for most individuals and any whole life or universal life product is inappropriate for those who do not meet one of the following criteria:

A.  Subject to the Estate Tax.

B.  In a high tax bracket.

C.  Maxed out on other qualified contributions.

D.  Closely held business owners wishing to discriminate or other business related situation ( Key Man, “Golden Handcuff” or Buy – Sell )

E.  Some other unusual circumstance where whole life is suitable (there are several)

F.  An individual that requires a guarantee and a product with a floor on it.

Indexed Universal Life products are tools and a tool needs to be suited to the job.  That said, In my practice I use this particular tool frequently, but only in the above situations where its use is dictated.  Leslie Scism of the Wall Street Journal is astute in pointing out that this is a great product for those who have maxed out other qualified contributions.  Additionally the article points out that these products are capped.  I am a fan of ING’s IUL which has no cap.

A great application for this product is a Restricted Employee Benefit plan.  If a business owner wants to compensate one specific employee these can work exceptionally well as they have a “golden handcuff” component where the employee is contractually bound to stay with the company for some specified agreed upon period.

I personally have been asked to sell these Indexed Universal Life Insurance to individuals who had no IRA or 401k and have declined.  Use the right tool for the job, ALWAYS put the client’s interest first.  Call me at 970-379-7777 or send me an Email for a quote.
